Multiple cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerabilities in Symantec Backup Exec 2010 R3 before 2010 R3 SP3 and 2012 before SP2 allow remote attackers to inject arbitrary web script or HTML via vectors involving a (1) custom-reports generation page, (2) Storage Devices creation page, or (3) jobs creation page in the management console; or (4) a Backup Exec server-management page in the beutility console.
The weakness was presented 08/01/2013 by Perran Hill, Shaun Jones, Edward Torkington, Daniele Costa and Andy Davis with NCC Group Research as SYM13-009 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at symantec.com. The public release was coordinated in cooperation with Symantec. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4676 since 06/24/2013. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1059.007 for this issue.
It is possible to download the exploit at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69263 (Symantec Backup Exec Server Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-009)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121383 (Symantec Backup Exec Multiple Vulnerabilities (SYM13-009)).
