phpMyAdmin 3.5.x and 4.0.x before 4.0.5 allows remote attackers to bypass the clickjacking protection mechanism via certain vectors related to Header.class.php.

The weakness was published 08/04/2013 by Emanuel Bronshtein with BugSec as PMASA-2013-10 as not defined advisory (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at phpmyadmin.net. The public release has been coordinated with the project team. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-5029 since 07/31/2013. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 75119 (openSUSE Security Update : phpMyAdmin (openSUSE-SU-2013:1343-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 122524 (Fedora Security Update for phpMyAdmin (FEDORA-2014-8577)).

Upgrading to version 4.0.5 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at github.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
