A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird (Web Browser). Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Frame Handler. Mozilla Firefox before 23.0, Firefox ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, Thunderbird before 17.0.8, Thunderbird ESR 17.x before 17.0.8, and SeaMonkey before 2.20 do not properly handle the interaction between FRAME elements and history, which allows remote attackers to conduct cross-site scripting (XSS) attacks via vectors involving spoofing a relative location in a previously visited document.
The weakness was shared 08/06/2013 by Federico Lanusse (moz_bug_r_a4) with Mozilla Corporation as MFSA 2013-68 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at mozilla.org. The vendor cooperated in the coordination of the public release. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1709 since 02/13/2013. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1059.007.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69245 (CentOS 5 / 6 : firefox (CESA-2013:1140)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121376 (Red Hat Update for Xulrunner Firefox (RHSA-2013:1140)).
Upgrading to version 23.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
