The rsa_verify function in PuTTY before 0.63 (1) does not clear sensitive process memory after use and (2) does not free certain structures containing sensitive process memory, which might allow local users to discover private RSA and DSA keys.

The weakness was disclosed 08/06/2013 with Coverity Scan Project as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is available at seclists.org. The public release has been coordinated in cooperation with the vendor. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4208 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. Local access is required to approach this attack. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69313 (Debian DSA-2736-1 : putty - several vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 166403 (OpenSuSE Security Update for Filezilla (openSUSE-SU-2013:1347-1)).

Upgrading to version 0.63 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (69313). The entries 9860, 9901 and 9945 are pretty similar.
