The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a inadequate encryption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-326. The product stores or transmits sensitive data using an encryption scheme that is theoretically sound, but is not strong enough for the level of protection required. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
The Mxit protocol uses weak encryption when encrypting user passwords, which might allow attackers to (1) decrypt hashed passwords by leveraging knowledge of client registration codes or (2) gain login access by eavesdropping on login messages and re-using the hashed passwords.
The bug was discovered 06/21/2016. The weakness was released 03/29/2017 by Yves Younan with Cisco Talos (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at security.gentoo.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-2379 since 02/12/2016. The exploitability is told to be difficult. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1600 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 210 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 96542 (GLSA-201701-38 : Pidgin: Multiple vulnerabilities), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370081 (Pidgin Multiple Security Vulnerabilities).
