Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in util-linux up to 2.25. This affects some unknown functionality of the file blkid.c of the component Blkid. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Blkid in util-linux before 2.26rc-1 allows local users to execute arbitrary code.
The bug was discovered 11/26/2014. The weakness was shared 03/31/2017 by Sebastian Krahmer (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-9114 since 11/26/2014. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 741 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95547 (GLSA-201612-14 : util-linux: Arbitrary code execution), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Gentoo Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 167685 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security update for util-linux (SUSE-SU-2015:0580-1)).
