FreeBSD 8.3/9.0 ftpd GLOB_LIMIT denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in FreeBSD 8.3/9.0 (Operating System). Affected is the function GLOB_LIMIT of the component ftpd. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. This is going to have an impact on availability. CVE summarizes:

Unspecified vulnerability in the FTP Server in Oracle Solaris 8, 9, 10, and 11 Express allows remote attackers to affect availability. NOTE: the previous information was obtained from the January 2011 CPU. Oracle has not commented on claims from a reliable researcher that this is an issue in the glob implementation in libc that allows remote authenticated users to cause a denial of service (CPU and memory consumption) via crafted glob expressions that do not match any pathnames.

The weakness was presented 02/19/2013 by Maksymilian Arciemowicz as FreeBSD-SA-13:02.libc as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is available at freebsd.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2010-2632 since 07/06/2010. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by Maksymilian Arciemowicz and been published before and not just after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at securityfocus.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 104 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 70481 (Juniper Junos GNU libc glob Remote DoS (JSA10598)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Junos Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 119352 (Apple Mac OS X v10.6.8 and Security Update 2011-004 Not Installed (APPLE-SA-2011-06-23-1)).

Upgrading to version 9.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 11177.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (64798), Tenable (70481) and Exploit-DB (15215). See 4241, 4244, 4245 and 4246 for similar entries.
