Linux Kernel up to 3.17 ecryptfs Subsystem fs/ecryptfs/main.c access control

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 3.17 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown code of the file fs/ecryptfs/main.c of the component ecryptfs Subsystem. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-264. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

The eCryptfs subsystem in the Linux kernel before 3.18 allows local users to gain privileges via a large filesystem stack that includes an overlayfs layer, related to fs/ecryptfs/main.c and fs/overlayfs/super.c.

The bug was discovered 03/01/2017. The weakness was presented 04/04/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2014-9922 since 03/01/2017. Local access is required to approach this attack. A simple authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit. This vulnerability is assigned to T1068 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 34 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 103110 (SUSE SLES11 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:2389-1) (Stack Clash)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170337 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for the Linux Kernel (SUSE-SU-2017:2389-1)).

Upgrading to version 3.18 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published 6 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
