Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8/9/10 CFlatMarkupPointer Object InsertImage memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, was found in Microsoft Internet Explorer 7/8/9/10 (Web Browser). Affected is an unknown code of the component CFlatMarkupPointer Object Handler. The manipulation of the argument InsertImage with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The software performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

The issue has been introduced in 07/27/2005. The weakness was published 08/13/2013 by Peter Van Eeckhoutte as MS13-059 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via Zero Day Initiative (ZDI). The advisory is available at The public release has been coordinated with the vendor. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-3184 since 04/17/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details and a public exploit are known.

A public exploit has been developed by metasploit and been published 4 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at It is declared as highly functional. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 2939 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69324 (MS13-059: Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer (2862772)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 100160 (Microsoft Internet Explorer Multiple Remote Code Execution Vulnerabilities (MS13-059)).

Applying the patch MS13-059 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13115.
