The ebl_object_note_type_name function in eblobjnotetypename.c in elfutils 0.168 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (heap-based buffer over-read and application crash) via a crafted ELF file.
The bug was discovered 04/03/2017. The weakness was disclosed 04/09/2017 by Agostino Sarubbo with Gentoo (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at blogs.gentoo.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-7608 since 04/09/2017. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100190 (Fedora 25 : elfutils (2017-5e4fb05a0a)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 176681 (Debian Security Update for elfutils (DLA 1689-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
