Linux Kernel 3.8 Common Internet File System DFS Referral Name numeric error

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel 3.8 (Operating System). It has been rated as critical. Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component Common Internet File System. The manipulation as part of a DFS Referral Name leads to a numeric error vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-189. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

Off-by-one error in the build_unc_path_to_root function in fs/cifs/connect.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) via a DFS share mount operation that triggers use of an unexpected DFS referral name length.

The weakness was published 05/31/2013 by Prasad J Pandit as Linux kernel: cifs: off-by-one bug in build_unc_path_to_root as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4247 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69419 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-raring vulnerabilities (USN-1936-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195986 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerability (USN-1919-1)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
