Off-by-one error in the build_unc_path_to_root function in fs/cifs/connect.c in the Linux kernel before 3.9.6 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (memory corruption and system crash) via a DFS share mount operation that triggers use of an unexpected DFS referral name length.
The weakness was published 05/31/2013 by Prasad J Pandit as Linux kernel: cifs: off-by-one bug in build_unc_path_to_root as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-4247 since 06/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack needs to be approached locally. The requirement for exploitation is a simple authentication. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69419 (Ubuntu 12.04 LTS : linux-lts-raring vulnerabilities (USN-1936-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
