Details
A vulnerability was found in Leptonica 1.74.4 and classified as critical. This issue affects the function gplotMakeOutput. The manipulation of the argument rootname with an unknown input leads to a os command injection vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-78. The product constructs all or part of an OS command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended OS command when it is sent to a downstream component. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
An exploitable command injection vulnerability exists in the gplotMakeOutput function of Leptonica 1.74.4. A specially crafted gplot rootname argument can cause a command injection resulting in arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious path as input to an application that passes attacker data to this function to trigger this vulnerability.
The bug was discovered 01/22/2018. The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.debian.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2018-3836 since 01/02/2018. The exploitation is known to be easy. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1202 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 21 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106785 (openSUSE Security Update : leptonica (openSUSE-2018-158)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170860 (OpenSUSE Security Update for leptonica (openSUSE-SU-2018:0429-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (106785). If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
