Summary
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.5. It has been rated as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function l2tp_ip6_sendmsg. The manipulation leads to integer overflow.
This vulnerability is documented as CVE-2022-49727. There is not any exploit available.
Upgrading the affected component is advised.
Details
A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 5.18.5 and classified as problematic. This issue affects the function l2tp_ip6_sendmsg. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. The impact remains unknown. The summary by CVE is:
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ipv6: Fix signed integer overflow in l2tp_ip6_sendmsg When len >= INT_MAX - transhdrlen, ulen = len + transhdrlen will be overflow. To fix, we can follow what udpv6 does and subtract the transhdrlen from the max.
It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2022-49727 since 02/26/2025. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit. The pricing for an exploit might be around USD $0-$5k at the moment (estimation calculated on 04/17/2025).
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 234545 (SUSE SLES12 Security Update : kernel (SUSE-SU-2025:1293-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 4.9.320, 4.14.285, 4.19.249, 5.4.200, 5.10.124, 5.15.49 or 5.18.6 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch 2cf73c7cb6125083408d77f43d0e84d86aed0000/0e818d433fc2718fe4da044ffca7431812a7e04e/6c4e3486d21173d60925ef52e512cae727b43d30/2f42389d270f2304c8855b0b63498a5a4d0c053d/b8879ca1fd7348b4d5db7db86dcb97f60c73d751/27a37755ceb401111ded76810359d3adc4b268a1/034246122f5c5e2e2a0b9fe04e24517920e9beb1/f638a84afef3dfe10554c51820c16e39a278c915 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version.
