Apache Tomcat Native Connector up to 1.1.34/1.2.14 OCSP Checker Client certificate validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

A vulnerability was found in Apache Tomcat Native Connector up to 1.1.34/1.2.14 (Application Server Software). It has been classified as critical. This affects an unknown code block of the component OCSP Checker. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate validation vulnerability (Client). CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-295. The product does not validate, or incorrectly validates, a certificate. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

When parsing the AIA-Extension field of a client certificate, Apache Tomcat Native Connector 1.2.0 to 1.2.14 and 1.1.23 to 1.1.34 did not correctly handle fields longer than 127 bytes. The result of the parsing error was to skip the OCSP check. It was therefore possible for client certificates that should have been rejected (if the OCSP check had been made) to be accepted. Users not using OCSP checks are not affected by this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 01/31/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2018 (Website). The advisory is shared at lists.apache.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2017-15698 since 10/21/2017. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1587.003 for this issue.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 106724 (Debian DLA-1276-1 : tomcat-native security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 277190 (Fedora Security Update for tomcat-native (FEDORA-2018-318b5d74bd)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (106724).
