The bug was discovered 01/19/2018. The weakness was disclosed 01/31/2018 with Red Hat (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-18043 since 01/19/2018. The exploitation appears to be easy. Attacking locally is a requirement. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 197060 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Qemu Vulnerabilities (USN-3575-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.qemu.org. A possible mitigation has been published 3 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
