389-ds-base before versions 1.3.8.5, 1.4.0.12 is vulnerable to a Cleartext Storage of Sensitive Information. By default, when the Replica and/or retroChangeLog plugins are enabled, 389-ds-base stores passwords in plaintext format in their respective changelog files. An attacker with sufficiently high privileges, such as root or Directory Manager, can query these files in order to retrieve plaintext passwords.
The bug was discovered 07/17/2018. The weakness was disclosed 07/18/2018 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is available at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2018-10871 since 05/09/2018. The exploitability is told to be easy. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. A authentication is needed for exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not available. This vulnerability is assigned to T1592 by the MITRE ATT&CK project.

The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 157848 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for 389-ds-base (ELSA-2018-3127)).
Upgrading to version 1.3.8.5 or 1.4.0.13 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
