CVE-2026-105642 in Ghostinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 10/05/2026

Ghost is a Node.js content management system. From 6.56.0 until 6.67.0, an image processing library bundled with Ghost contained a vulnerability in its SVG handling. Any staff user, including Contributors, could create a bookmark card for an attacker-controlled website, resulting in arbitrary commands being run on the Ghost server. This issue is fixed in version 6.67.0.

The vulnerability identified within the Node.js-based content management system known as Ghost affects versions ranging from 6.56.0 through 6.67.0, stemming specifically from a flaw in an image processing library bundled with the platform that handles Scalable Vector Graphics or SVG files. This security defect allows for arbitrary command execution on the server hosting the Ghost instance, representing a critical escalation of privilege and remote code execution risk. The root cause lies in how the application processes user-supplied content during the creation of bookmark cards, where insufficient sanitization or validation of embedded SVG elements permits malicious payloads to bypass intended restrictions and execute system-level commands when rendered or processed by the backend services.

From an operational perspective, this vulnerability is particularly dangerous because it can be exploited by any staff user within the Ghost ecosystem, including those with lower privilege levels such as Contributors. Typically, contributor accounts are restricted from performing administrative actions that could compromise server integrity, but in this scenario, a Contributor can craft a malicious bookmark card linked to an attacker-controlled website containing a specially crafted SVG payload. When another user or system component interacts with this content, the vulnerable image processing library parses the SVG data without adequate safeguards against command injection vectors embedded within XML attributes or script tags. This results in the execution of arbitrary commands on the host server under the context of the Ghost application process, potentially leading to full system compromise, data exfiltration, lateral movement within the network, and persistent backdoors depending on the configuration and permissions granted to the web service account.

This flaw aligns with Common Weakness Enumeration categories such as CWE-94 Improper Control of Generation of Code or Command Injection, where software constructs code from user input without proper neutralization of special elements that could alter command structure. Additionally, in terms of tactical mapping within the MITRE ATT&CK framework, this vulnerability facilitates Initial Access via valid accounts and Execution through system commands injected during content processing. The attack vector is classified as remote with low complexity due to the ease of creating bookmark cards, yet it requires a specific level of authentication, placing it at medium difficulty for exploitation compared to unauthenticated attacks but high impact given the resulting server control.

To mitigate this risk, organizations running Ghost must immediately upgrade their instances to version 6.67.0 or later, where the underlying image processing library has been patched to properly sanitize SVG inputs and prevent command injection vectors. Until upgrading is feasible, administrators should enforce strict role-based access controls to limit who can create bookmark cards or publish content that includes external links with embedded media. Implementing a Web Application Firewall may provide some layer of defense by inspecting HTTP requests for known malicious patterns associated with SVG exploitation, though this is not a substitute for patching the application itself. Furthermore, running the Ghost service under a restricted user account with minimal system privileges can reduce the impact if an exploit succeeds, ensuring that even if arbitrary commands are executed, they cannot access sensitive files or modify critical system configurations beyond what is necessary for normal operation.
