A vulnerability was found in OpenSSL up to 1.0.2h (Network Encryption Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is some unknown processing in the library s3_srvr.c/ssl_sess.c/t1_lib.c of the file s3_srvr.c. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:
OpenSSL through 1.0.2h incorrectly uses pointer arithmetic for heap-buffer boundary checks, which might allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (integer overflow and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact by leveraging unexpected malloc behavior, related to s3_srvr.c, ssl_sess.c, and t1_lib.c.
The weakness was published 06/01/2016 by Guido Vranken as Bug 1341705 as confirmed bug report (Bugzilla). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.redhat.com. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2016-2177 since 01/29/2016. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 08/24/2022). The reason for this vulnerability is this part of code:
if (p + j > d + n)
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 91909 (FreeBSD : openssl -- denial of service (0ca24682-3f03-11e6-b3c8-14dae9d210b8)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 316384 (Cisco Unity Express OpenSSL Multiple Vulnerabilities (cisco-sa-20160927-openssl)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.openssl.org. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. The vulnerability will be addressed with the following lines of code:
if ((d + n) - p < j)
The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at Tenable (91909). Similar entries are available at 87879, 90396, 90937 and 90940.
