CVE-2026-55098 in Arc
Summary
by MITRE • 10/30/2026
Arc is an open, SQL-native time-series database for telemetry. Prior to the repository-verified 26.06.2 repair, the remediation of `CVE-2026-47735` leaves a cross-database authorization bypass through DuckDB table-valued I/O functions. In `internal/database/sandbox.go`, `allowed_directories` uses `cfg.LocalStorageRoot`, configured by `storage.local_path`, while `enable_external_access=false` blocks access outside that entire multi-tenant root. `GetStoragePath` in `internal/storage/util.go` stores all databases beneath it. In `internal/api/query.go`, `extractTableReferences` skips names followed by an opening parenthesis and `checkQueryPermissions` allows queries with no extracted table references, including tokens with `permissions: []`. The `userSQLReadParquetPattern` denylist catches literal `read_parquet(` and the earlier protection also blocks `arc_partition_agg(`, but misses the `parquet_scan` alias and `glob`, `parquet_metadata`, `parquet_schema`, `read_blob`, `read_csv_auto`, `read_json` and `read_text`. A request to `POST /api/v1/query` using these unblocked functions passes `ValidateSQLRequest` and `convertSQLToStoragePaths` without tenant authorization, allowing reads and enumeration of other databases' time-series data, schema and per-column value-range statistics within the allowlisted root. The sandbox still blocks out-of-root OS files and HTTP SSRF, and the sibling SQLite token database outside the root is not exposed by this mechanism. The earlier 26.06.1 remediation does not comprehensively deny these I/O functions. Repository tag 26.06.2 contains the I/O-function repair and supplies the provisional remediation boundary; conflicting advisory affected-version statements require curator adjudication.

The vulnerability identified as CVE-2026-47735 represents a critical cross-database authorization bypass within Arc, an open-source SQL-native time-series database designed for telemetry data management. This flaw exists in versions prior to the repository-verified 26.06.2 release and stems from incomplete remediation of earlier security controls intended to isolate multi-tenant environments. The core issue lies in the interaction between DuckDB table-valued input/output functions and the internal authorization logic that governs access to underlying storage paths. While the system is designed to restrict database operations to a specific local storage root defined by the configuration parameter storage.local_path, certain SQL functions bypass these restrictions due to gaps in pattern matching within the query permission checks.
The technical mechanism of this vulnerability involves several components working together to create an unauthorized data access vector. The sandboxing logic in internal/database/sandbox.go relies on allowed_directories derived from cfg.LocalStorageRoot when enable_external_access is set to false, theoretically preventing access outside this multi-tenant root. All databases are stored beneath this path via GetStoragePath in internal/storage/util.go. However, the authorization check performed during query execution contains significant loopholes. In internal/api/query.go, the extractTableReferences function skips names followed by an opening parenthesis, and consequently, checkQueryPermissions allows queries that do not have extracted table references, including those with empty permission arrays. This logic flaw means that standard SQL injection techniques targeting specific tables are blocked, but alternative methods of data access remain viable.
The primary attack vector exploits unblocked DuckDB I/O functions such as parquet_scan, glob, parquet_metadata, parquet_schema, read_blob, read_csv_auto, read_json, and read_text. While the userSQLReadParquetPattern denylist successfully blocks literal calls to read_parquet and arc_partition_agg, it fails to account for these alternative aliases and function names. An attacker can craft a malicious request to POST /api/v1/query utilizing any of these unblocked functions. Because ValidateSQLRequest and convertSQLToStoragePath do not adequately restrict these specific I/O operations based on tenant identity, the query passes through without proper authorization checks. This allows an authenticated user with limited permissions to read and enumerate time-series data from other databases within the same allowlisted root directory.
The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe for multi-tenant deployments where data isolation between tenants is a fundamental security requirement. Attackers can perform unauthorized reads, enumerating not only raw telemetry data but also schema definitions and per-column value-range statistics belonging to other tenants. This constitutes a significant breach of confidentiality and integrity principles within the application's architecture. The vulnerability aligns with CWE-269 Improper Privilege Management and CWE-787 Out-of-bounds Read in terms of accessing unauthorized memory or data structures, while its exploitation technique relates to ATT&CK T1005 Data from Local System Retrieval. Although the sandbox effectively blocks out-of-root operating system file access and HTTP Server-Side Request Forgery attacks, it does not mitigate this specific internal cross-database leakage path.
Mitigation requires immediate upgrading to version 26.06.2 or later, which contains the comprehensive repair for these I/O function loopholes. Until an upgrade is performed, administrators should review their DuckDB configuration and consider implementing additional application-level filtering rules that explicitly deny all table-valued functions capable of reading external data sources unless strictly necessary. It is also advisable to audit query logs for attempts using the specific unblocked functions identified in this advisory. The conflicting advisory affected-version statements require curator adjudication, but given the severity of the cross-tenant data exposure, treating any version prior to 26.06.2 as vulnerable is the recommended security posture.
