CVE-2026-77564 in Talosinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 10/14/2026

Talos Linux is a Linux distribution built for Kubernetes deployments. Prior to 1.12.9 and 1.13.3, talosctl support includes the auth field from resources/registryconfigs.cri.talos.dev.yaml and sensitive content from etcfilespecs.files.talos.dev.yaml in generated support bundles instead of marking or redacting those resources. An operator who shares a bundle with an unintended party can therefore disclose private registry authentication parameters, with impact depending on the registry's network exposure and credential privileges. Talos 1.14 and later encrypt support bundles by default, which reduces but does not replace the need for redaction. This issue is fixed in versions 1.12.9 and 1.13.3.

Talos Linux serves as a specialized operating system distribution designed specifically for Kubernetes deployments, emphasizing security and minimalism by defaulting to immutable infrastructure principles. Within this ecosystem, the talosctl command-line interface provides diagnostic capabilities that allow operators to generate support bundles containing cluster state information for troubleshooting purposes. However, prior to versions 1.12.9 and 1.13.3, a significant flaw existed in how these support bundles were constructed regarding sensitive configuration data. Specifically, the tool failed to properly redact or mask critical authentication credentials embedded within resource definitions such as registryconfigs.cri.talos.dev.yaml and file specifications found in etcfilespecs.files.talos.dev.yaml. This oversight resulted in plaintext exposure of private registry authentication parameters directly within the generated diagnostic artifacts.

The technical root cause lies in a failure to apply appropriate sanitization rules during the bundle generation process, which constitutes an improper access control vulnerability where sensitive data is exposed without authorization or masking mechanisms. From a classification perspective, this aligns with CWE-200: Exposure of Sensitive Information to an Unauthorized Actor and CWE-798: Use of Hard-coded Credentials if static credentials were involved in the registry configurations. The operational impact is severe because support bundles are often shared externally with vendors, consultants, or internal teams who may not have explicit clearance for such high-level secrets. If a bundle containing these plaintext credentials falls into unintended hands, an attacker could leverage them to authenticate against private container registries. This access allows for the theft of proprietary software images, potential supply chain attacks through image tampering, and further lateral movement within environments where those registry credentials hold elevated privileges or broad pull permissions.

Mitigation strategies must address both immediate remediation and long-term security posture improvements. The primary corrective action is to upgrade Talos Linux nodes immediately to version 1.12.9 or later for the stable branch, or version 1.13.3 and later for the development branch, where this specific redaction logic has been corrected. For organizations already running newer versions such as 1.14 and beyond, it is important to note that support bundles are encrypted by default, which significantly reduces the risk of plaintext exposure during transit or storage. However encryption alone should not be viewed as a complete substitute for proper data handling practices; operators must still ensure that sensitive configurations do not contain overly permissive credentials and adhere to the principle of least privilege. Additionally, internal policies regarding support bundle sharing should mandate verification of redaction status before transmission to third parties, ensuring that no unmasked secrets leave the secure environment boundary.
