Analysis

The vulnerability described involves a critical flaw in the authentication and session management mechanisms of Acronis Cyber Protect versions prior to build 42587 for both Linux and Windows platforms. This issue stems from improper validation of security tokens, which are essential components used to verify user identity and authorize access to protected resources within the application. When token validation is not performed rigorously or correctly, it creates an avenue for attackers to bypass intended security controls, leading to unauthorized access and potential data compromise.

From a technical perspective, this flaw aligns with CWE-287, which categorizes issues related to improper authentication, as well as CWE-345 regarding the lack of verification of expected authenticity. In many modern web-based or API-driven applications like Acronis Cyber Protect, tokens such as JSON Web Tokens (JWT) or session cookies are issued after successful login and must be validated on every subsequent request to ensure they have not been tampered with, expired, or revoked. If the application fails to verify the signature of these tokens against a trusted secret key, or if it neglects to check expiration times and issuer claims, an attacker can forge valid-looking tokens using publicly available algorithms like none or by exploiting weak signing keys. This allows the malicious actor to impersonate legitimate users without possessing their actual credentials.

The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe, as it directly facilitates sensitive information disclosure and data manipulation. An authenticated session token that has not been properly validated can be intercepted through network sniffing if transport layer security is misconfigured or bypassed via man-in-the-middle attacks. Once obtained, the attacker does not need to crack passwords; they simply replay or modify the token to gain access to administrative functions within Acronis Cyber Protect. This could allow them to view sensitive backup data, alter configuration settings, disable security agents on protected endpoints, or even execute remote commands depending on the privileges associated with the compromised account. The ability to manipulate tokens also opens the door for privilege escalation attacks if lower-privileged users can forge tokens that mimic higher-privileged roles within the system architecture.

This type of vulnerability is frequently mapped to MITRE ATT&CK techniques such as T1078, which covers Valid Accounts and specifically T1528, Steal Application Access Tokens. Attackers leverage these methods to establish persistence or move laterally across a network by reusing stolen credentials in the form of valid session tokens rather than traditional password hashes. The absence of robust token validation means that even if multi-factor authentication was used during initial login, the subsequent sessions remain vulnerable to hijacking because the application does not sufficiently verify the integrity and validity of each request's authorization header.

To mitigate this risk, organizations running Acronis Cyber Protect must immediately apply the vendor-recommended patch by upgrading to build 42587 or later on all affected Linux and Windows installations. This update addresses the underlying code defects responsible for the lax token validation logic. In addition to applying patches, administrators should enforce strict HTTPS usage with strong cipher suites to prevent token interception during transit. Implementing short-lived session tokens combined with refresh token rotation can further limit the window of opportunity for attackers who manage to steal a valid token. Regular security audits and penetration testing focused on authentication flows are also recommended to identify similar weaknesses in other integrated systems within the enterprise environment.
