CVE-2026-87667 in Fabric OSinfo

Summary

by MITRE • 10/08/2026

An argument injection vulnerability exists in the configuration management command-line utility of Brocade Fabric OS versions before 9.2.2d and 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1. When executing configuration viewing commands with search pattern filters, the utility fails to sanitize user-supplied search string options before passing them to internal search commands. An authenticated user with low-privilege administrative access can exploit this vulnerability to read arbitrary files on the local operating system, including sensitive configuration files, system password hashes and system secrets.

The identified flaw represents a critical argument injection vulnerability within the Brocade Fabric OS configuration management command-line utility, specifically affecting versions prior to 9.2.2d and those in the 10.0.0 through 10.0.0a1 range. This security deficiency arises from an insufficient sanitization of user-supplied input when executing configuration viewing commands that utilize search pattern filters. The core technical issue lies in the failure of the utility to properly validate or escape special characters within the provided search strings before passing them as arguments to underlying internal system commands. By leveraging this lack of input validation, an attacker can manipulate the command line structure, effectively injecting additional operating system commands into the execution flow. This type of flaw is formally categorized under CWE-78 Improper Neutralization of Special Elements used in an OS Command, commonly known as OS Command Injection, where untrusted data influences the control flow or arguments of a non-shell process.

The operational impact of this vulnerability is severe due to the specific privilege level required for exploitation and the sensitivity of the accessible data. An authenticated user possessing low-privilege administrative access can exploit this flaw without needing elevated root privileges initially. Once exploited, the attacker gains the ability to read arbitrary files from the local operating system environment where the Fabric OS resides. This capability extends beyond standard configuration data to include highly sensitive artifacts such as system password hashes and cryptographic secrets stored on disk. The extraction of these credentials allows for further lateral movement within the network infrastructure or facilitates offline cracking attacks against user accounts, thereby compromising the integrity and confidentiality of the entire storage area network environment managed by the affected switch.

From a threat intelligence perspective, this vulnerability aligns with ATT&CK technique T1059 Command and Scripting Interpreter, specifically sub-technique T1059.004 Unix Shell, as it involves constructing commands via shell arguments to achieve unauthorized access. The exploitation path typically follows the pattern of Initial Access through valid credentials followed by Local Privilege Escalation or Credential Access depending on whether the injected command is used solely for file reading or if it leads to further system compromise. The ability to read password hashes directly from the filesystem bypasses standard authentication mechanisms and logging controls, making detection difficult without specialized monitoring of process arguments or file access patterns associated with the configuration utility.

To mitigate this risk, organizations running affected versions must prioritize applying the vendor-released patches immediately. Specifically, upgrading Brocade Fabric OS to version 9.2.2d or later for the legacy branch, or to a version beyond 10.0.0a1 for the newer release line is essential to resolve the input validation deficiency. In environments where immediate patching is not feasible due to operational constraints, administrators should enforce strict access controls on the configuration management utility, ensuring that only highly trusted personnel with minimal necessary privileges can execute commands involving search patterns. Additionally, implementing network segmentation to restrict administrative access from untrusted networks and monitoring for anomalous command-line arguments in system logs can provide a layer of defense-in-depth against exploitation attempts while patching efforts are underway.
