ifconfig, quando utilizzato con il kernel Linux 2.2 e versioni successive, non segnala se l'interfaccia di rete è in modalità promiscua qualora questa sia stata attivata tramite PACKET_MR_PROMISC; ciò potrebbe consentire agli attaccanti di intercettare (sniffare) la rete senza essere rilevati, come dimostrato utilizzando libpcap.
