Details
A vulnerability classified as critical has been found in Oracle PeopleSoft Enterprise PeopleTools 8.54/8.55 (Enterprise Resource Planning Software). This affects an unknown functionality of the component Portal. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a certificate host validation vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-297. The bug was discovered 08/20/2014. The weakness was disclosed 04/19/2017 by David Jorm with Red Hat as Oracle Critical Patch Update Advisory - April 2017 as confirmed advisory (Website). The advisory is shared at oracle.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2014-3596 since 05/14/2014. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1587.003 for this issue.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 78355 (Amazon Linux AMI : axis (ALAS-2014-412)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 172421 (SUSE Enterprise Linux Security Update for axis (SUSE-SU-2019:1382-1)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
