Details
A vulnerability was found in Artifex Ghostscript 9.21 (Document Processing Software). It has been declared as problematic. This vulnerability affects the function mark_curve of the component PostScript Document Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a integer overflow vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-190. The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound, when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This can introduce other weaknesses when the calculation is used for resource management or execution control. As an impact it is known to affect availability. CVE summarizes:
Integer overflow in the mark_curve function in Artifex Ghostscript 9.21 allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds write and application crash) or possibly have unspecified other impact via a crafted PostScript document.
The bug was discovered 03/29/2017. The weakness was presented 04/19/2017 as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is available at git.ghostscript.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-7948 since 04/19/2017. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. Technical details are known, but there is no available exploit.
