Linux Kernel up to 4.9.8 USB HID drivers/hid/hid-cp2112.c denial of service

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.9.8 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown processing of the file drivers/hid/hid-cp2112.c of the component USB HID Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a denial of service vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-404. The product does not release or incorrectly releases a resource before it is made available for re-use. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

drivers/hid/hid-cp2112.c in the Linux kernel 4.9.x before 4.9.9 uses a spinlock without considering that sleeping is possible in a USB HID request callback, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (deadlock) via unspecified vectors.

The bug was discovered 04/16/2017. The weakness was disclosed 04/23/2017 (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at openwall.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-8071 since 04/23/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a single authentication. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 7 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 351446 (Amazon Linux Security Advisory for kernel: ALAC2012-2018-012).

Upgrading to version 4.9.9 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the vulnerability database at SecurityFocus (BID 97991†). The entries VDB-100467, VDB-100468, VDB-100470 and VDB-100471 are pretty similar. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
