Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Linux Kernel up to 2.6.38 (Operating System). This issue affects the function video_usercopy of the file drivers/media/video/v4l2-ioctl.c. The manipulation of the argument count with an unknown input leads to a resource management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-399. Impacted is availability. The summary by CVE is:
The video_usercopy function in drivers/media/video/v4l2-ioctl.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.39 relies on the count value of a v4l2_ext_controls data structure to determine a kmalloc size, which might allow local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large value.
The bug was discovered 02/08/2015. The weakness was disclosed 04/24/2017 (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at openwall.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2010-5329 since 04/23/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A simple authentication is required for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 806 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 217385 (Linux Distros Unpatched Vulnerability : CVE-2010-5329), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment.
Upgrading to version 2.6.39 eliminates this vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (217385) and SecurityFocus (BID 97986†). The entry VDB-100486 is pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
