The Sun Java Plugin capability in Java 2 Runtime Environment (JRE) 1.4.2_01, 1.4.2_04, and possibly earlier versions, does not properly restrict access between Javascript and Java applets during data transfer, which allows remote attackers to load unsafe classes and execute arbitrary code by using the reflection API to access private Java packages.
The bug was discovered 04/29/2004. The weakness was published 11/22/2004 by Jouko Pynnonen with iDEFENSE (Website). The advisory is shared at idefense.com. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2004-1029 since 11/12/2004. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. No form of authentication is needed for exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 207 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 15821 , which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90198 (Sun Java Runtime Environment Java Plug-in JavaScript Security Restriction Bypass Vulnerability).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at java.sun.com. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be upgrading to the latest version. A possible mitigation has been published 3 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 4731.
