A vulnerability was found in Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird on Windows (Web Browser). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown function of the component Path Handler. The manipulation of the argument UninstallString with an unknown input leads to a privileges management vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-269. The product does not properly assign, modify, track, or check privileges for an actor, creating an unintended sphere of control for that actor. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity.
The weakness was disclosed 08/28/2012 by Stefan Kanthak as CVE request for Mozilla Firefox (Windows) as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared for download at seclists.org. The public release happened without coordination with the vendor. The attack may be launched remotely. The successful exploitation requires a simple authentication. Technical details as well as a public exploit are known. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1068.
After immediately, there has been an exploit disclosed. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The real existence of this vulnerability is still doubted at the moment.
Upgrading to version 23.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 years after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
