Cast in Google Chrome prior to 57.0.2987.98 for Mac, Windows, and Linux and 57.0.2987.108 for Android sent cookies to sites discovered via SSDP, which allowed an attacker on the local network segment to initiate connections to arbitrary URLs and observe any plaintext cookies sent.
The bug was discovered 03/09/2017. The weakness was released 04/24/2017 by Holger Fuhrmannek with Tencent (Website). The advisory is shared for download at chromereleases.googleblog.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-5042 since 01/02/2017. The attack can only be done within the local network. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. Successful exploitation requires user interaction by the victim. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 6 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $25k-$100k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 97783 (Debian DSA-3810-1 : chromium-browser - security update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Debian Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236287 (Red Hat Update for chromium-browser Security (RHSA-2017:0499)).
Upgrading to version 57.0.2987.98 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
