Details
A vulnerability was found in Apache Hadoop up to 2.6.x (Network Management Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects an unknown functionality of the component HDFS Servlet. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
HDFS clients interact with a servlet on the DataNode to browse the HDFS namespace. The NameNode is provided as a query parameter that is not validated in Apache Hadoop before 2.7.0.
The bug was discovered 04/25/2017. The weakness was shared 04/26/2017 (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at s.apache.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-3162 since 12/05/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 111878 (Photon OS 1.0: Cassandra / Libxml2 / Linux / Ruby PHSA-2017-0029 (deprecated)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family PhotonOS Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 11806 (Apache Hadoop Prior to 2.7.0 Multiple Vulnerabilities).
Upgrading to version 2.7.0 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 4 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (111878) and SecurityFocus (BID 98017†). seclists.org is providing further details. The entry VDB-100618 is related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
