Details
A vulnerability was found in FreeBSD 10.3/11.0 (Operating System). It has been rated as problematic. Affected by this issue is an unknown part of the component ipfilter Hash Table. The manipulation as part of a Fragmented Packet leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:
In FreeBSD before 11.0-STABLE, 11.0-RELEASE-p10, 10.3-STABLE, and 10.3-RELEASE-p19, ipfilter using "keep state" or "keep frags" options can cause a kernel panic when fed specially crafted packet fragments due to incorrect memory handling.
The bug was discovered 04/27/2017. The weakness was presented 04/27/2017 by Cy Schubert as FreeBSD-SA-17:04.ipfilter as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at security.FreeBSD.org. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2017-1081 since 11/30/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99994 (FreeBSD < 10.3-RELEASE-p19 / 11.0 < 11.0-RELEASE-p10 ipfilter Kernel Module Packet Fragment DoS (FreeBSD-SA-17:04.ipfilter)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family FreeBSD Local Security Checks and running in the context l.
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (99994), SecurityFocus (BID 98089†) and SecurityTracker (ID 1038369†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
