A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in VMware Workstation and Player on Debian Linux (Virtualization Software) (version now known). This affects some unknown processing of the file /usr/bin/vmware-mount of the component Mount Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a access control vulnerability. vmware-mount in VMware Workstation 8.x and 9.x and VMware Player 4.x and 5.x, on systems based on Debian GNU/Linux, allows host OS users to gain host OS privileges via a crafted lsb_release binary in a directory in the PATH, related to use of the popen library function.

It looks like Debian originally decided they didn't want privmode because it broke UUCP.This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-1662 since 02/12/2013. An attack has to be approached locally. Required for exploitation is a authentication. Technical details and a public exploit are known. MITRE ATT&CK project uses the attack technique T1068 for this issue. The advisory points out:
On most modern Linux systems, /bin/sh is provided by bash, which detects that it's being invoked as sh, and attempts to mimic traditional sh. As everyone who works in security quickly learns, bash will drop privileges very early if uid != euid. (…) However, this never really happens on Debian derived systems.
A public exploit has been developed by Tavis Ormandy (@taviso) in Bash and been published immediately after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at blog.cmpxchg8b.com. It is declared as highly functional. We expect the 0-day to have been worth approximately $25k-$100k. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 121406 (Multiple VMware Products Local Privilege Escalation Vulnerability). The advisory illustrates:

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at patch-tracker.debian.org. It is possible to mitigate the problem by applying the configuration setting chmod u-s /usr/bin/vmware-mount. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
