VMware ESX 4.0/4.1/5.0/5.1 NFC Protocol input validation

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in VMware ESX 4.0/4.1/5.0/5.1 (Virtualization Software). Affected by this issue is some unknown processing of the component NFC Protocol Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the properties that are required to process the data safely and correctly. Impacted is availability. CVE summarizes:

VMware ESXi 4.0 through 5.1, and ESX 4.0 and 4.1, does not properly implement the Network File Copy (NFC) protocol, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to cause a denial of service (unhandled exception and application crash) by modifying the client-server data stream.

The weakness was published 08/29/2013 by Alex Chapman with Context Information Security as VMSA-2013-0011 as not defined bulletin (Website). The advisory is shared for download at vmware.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2013-1661 since 02/12/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69550 (VMSA-2013-0011 : VMware ESXi and ESX address an NFC Protocol Unhandled Exception), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family VMware ESX Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 216052 (VMWare ESX 4.0.0 Patch Release ESX400-201305001 Missing (KB2044240)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (69550), SecurityFocus (BID 62077†), OSVDB (96761†), Secunia (SA54614†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-41331†). Similar entry is available at VDB-5923. Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
