Details
A vulnerability was found in LibTIFF on Linux (Image Processing Software). It has been classified as very critical. Affected is the function readgifimage of the file tools/gif2tiff.c of the component GIF to TIFF Convertor. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Heap-based buffer overflow in the readgifimage function in the gif2tiff tool in libtiff 4.0.3 and earlier allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (crash) and possibly execute arbitrary code via a crafted height and width values in a GIF image.
The weakness was shared 08/14/2013 by Murray McAllister with Red Hat Security Response Team as 2451 as not defined bug report (Website). The advisory is shared for download at bugzilla.maptools.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2013-4243 since 06/12/2013. It is possible to launch the attack remotely. The exploitation doesn't require any form of authentication. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The current price for an exploit might be approx. USD $0-$5k (estimation calculated on 05/21/2021).
