Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Linux Kernel (Operating System). This issue affects an unknown functionality of the file drivers/hid/hid-sensor-hub.c of the component sensor-hub HID Driver. The manipulation of the argument CONFIG_HID_SENSOR_HUB with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-20. The product receives input or data, but it does
not validate or incorrectly validates that the input has the
properties that are required to process the data safely and
correctly. Impacted is confidentiality, and integrity. The summary by CVE is:
drivers/hid/hid-sensor-hub.c in the Human Interface Device (HID) subsystem in the Linux kernel through 3.11, when CONFIG_HID_SENSOR_HUB is enabled, allows physically proximate attackers to obtain sensitive information from kernel memory via a crafted device.
The weakness was shared 08/28/2013 by Kees Cook with Google Inc. as Linux HID security flaws as not defined mailinglist post (oss-sec). The advisory is shared at seclists.org. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2013-2898 since 04/11/2013. The exploitation is known to be difficult. An attack has to be approached locally. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 72472 (Oracle Linux 6 : Unbreakable Enterprise kernel (ELSA-2014-3002)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Oracle Linux Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 195946 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux-lts-raring Vulnerabilities (USN-1995-1)).
Upgrading to version 3.11.2 eliminates this vulnerability. Applying the patch PATCH 12/14 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at marc.info. The best possible mitigation is suggested to be patching the affected component. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at X-Force (86829), Tenable (72472), SecurityFocus (BID 62056†), OSVDB (96769†) and Vulnerability Center (SBV-42833†). The entries VDB-10095, VDB-10106, VDB-10107 and VDB-10108 are related to this item. If you want to get the best quality for vulnerability data then you always have to consider VulDB.
