Details
A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, was found in perltidy up to 20160302 (Programming Language Software). This affects an unknown part. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. CWE is classifying the issue as CWE-59. The product attempts to access a file based on the filename, but it does not properly prevent that filename from identifying a link or shortcut that resolves to an unintended resource. This is going to have an impact on confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
perltidy through 20160302, as used by perlcritic, check-all-the-things, and other software, relies on the current working directory for certain output files and does not have a symlink-attack protection mechanism, which allows local users to overwrite arbitrary files by creating a symlink, as demonstrated by creating a perltidy.ERR symlink that the victim cannot delete.
The bug was discovered 08/13/2016. The weakness was presented 05/17/2017 (Website). The advisory is shared at bugs.debian.org. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2016-10374 since 05/17/2017. An attack has to be approached locally. A authentication is necessary for exploitation. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available.
