Linux Kernel up to 4.11.1 IPv6 Fragmentation nexthdr out-of-bounds

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Summaryinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.1 and classified as problematic. The affected element is an unknown function of the component IPv6 Fragmentation Handler. This manipulation of the argument nexthdr as part of System Calls causes out-of-bounds. This vulnerability appears as CVE-2017-9074. The attack requires local access. There is no available exploit. It is recommended to apply a patch to fix this issue.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.1 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component IPv6 Fragmentation Handler. The manipulation of the argument nexthdr as part of a System Calls leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:

The IPv6 fragmentation implementation in the Linux kernel through 4.11.1 does not consider that the nexthdr field may be associated with an invalid option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and BUG) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted socket and send system calls.

The bug was discovered 05/19/2017. The weakness was presented 05/19/2017 by Andrey Konovalov as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-9074 since 05/19/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.

The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100435 (Fedora 25 : kernel (2017-273b67d5ee)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Fedora Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276660 (Fedora Security Update for kernel (FEDORA-2017-273b67d5ee)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (100435) and SecurityFocus (BID 98577†). See VDB-101073, VDB-101471, VDB-101504 and VDB-101505 for similar entries. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
