Details
A vulnerability classified as problematic was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.1 (Operating System). Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown part of the component IPv6 Fragmentation Handler. The manipulation of the argument nexthdr as part of a System Calls leads to a out-of-bounds vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-125. The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer. As an impact it is known to affect availability. The summary by CVE is:
The IPv6 fragmentation implementation in the Linux kernel through 4.11.1 does not consider that the nexthdr field may be associated with an invalid option, which allows local users to cause a denial of service (out-of-bounds read and BUG) or possibly have unspecified other impact via crafted socket and send system calls.
The bug was discovered 05/19/2017. The weakness was presented 05/19/2017 by Andrey Konovalov as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). It is possible to read the advisory at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-9074 since 05/19/2017. Attacking locally is a requirement. A single authentication is necessary for exploitation. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
