Apple iOS up to 10.3.1 Foundation memory corruption

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability, which was classified as critical, has been found in Apple iOS up to 10.3.1 (Smartphone Operating System). This issue affects an unknown code of the component Foundation. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a memory corruption vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-119. The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it can read from or write to a memory location that is outside of the intended boundary of the buffer. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:

An issue was discovered in certain Apple products. iOS before 10.3.2 is affected. macOS before 10.12.5 is affected. tvOS before 10.2.1 is affected. watchOS before 3.2.2 is affected. The issue involves the "Foundation" component. It allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption and application crash) via crafted data.

The bug was discovered 05/19/2017. The weakness was disclosed 05/22/2017 by Ian Beer with Google Project Zero (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at support.apple.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-2523 since 12/01/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available.

A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research and been published 1 days after the advisory. The exploit is available at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 3 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $100k and more.

Upgrading to version 10.3.2 eliminates this vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Exploit-DB (42050) and SecurityFocus (BID 98584†). The entries VDB-101255, VDB-101256, VDB-101257 and VDB-101258 are pretty similar. Be aware that VulDB is the high quality source for vulnerability data.
