A vulnerability classified as critical was found in GNOME Display Manager up to 2.21.0. Affected by this vulnerability is an unknown function of the file /tmp/.X11-unix/ of the component Directory Handler. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a link following vulnerability. GNOME Display Manager (gdm) before 2.21.1 allows local users to change permissions of arbitrary directories via a symlink attack on /tmp/.X11-unix/.
The weakness was released 09/05/2013 by vladz as confirmed mailinglist post (oss-sec). It is possible to read the advisory at seclists.org. The public release was coordinated with GNOME. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2013-4169 since 06/12/2013. Attacking locally is a requirement. The successful exploitation requires a single authentication. Technical details of the vulnerability are known, but there is no available exploit.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69791 (CentOS 5 : gdm / initscripts (CESA-2013:1213)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family CentOS Local Security Checks. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 156676 (Oracle Enterprise Linux Security Update for gdm (ELSA-2013-1213)).
Upgrading to version 2.21.1 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
