A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform up to 6.4.14 (Application Server Software). Affected by this issue is an unknown code block of the component RESTEasy. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a input validation vulnerability. JBoss RESTEasy before version 3.1.2 could be forced into parsing a request with YamlProvider, resulting in unmarshalling of potentially untrusted data which could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code with RESTEasy application permissions.
The bug was discovered 12/01/2016. The weakness was disclosed 05/18/2017 as RHSA-2017:1253 as confirmed security advisory (Website). The advisory is shared for download at access.redhat.com. This vulnerability is handled as CVE-2016-9606 since 11/23/2016. The attack may be launched remotely. No form of authentication is required for exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 168 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100288 (RHEL 6 : jboss-ec2-eap (RHSA-2017:1260)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Red Hat Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236406 (Red Hat Update for eap7-jboss-ec2-eap (RHSA-2017:1412)).
Upgrading to version 6.4.15 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
