Details
A vulnerability was found in VMware ESX and ESXi up to 5.0 (Virtualization Software). It has been rated as critical. This issue affects some unknown functionality. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a path traversal vulnerability. Using CWE to declare the problem leads to CWE-22. The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory. Impacted is confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The summary by CVE is:
Directory traversal vulnerability in VMware ESXi 4.0 through 5.0, and ESX 4.0 and 4.1, allows remote attackers to delete arbitrary host OS files via unspecified vectors.
The weakness was disclosed 08/24/2013 by Shanon Olsson as not defined blog post (Blog). It is possible to read the advisory at blog.shanonolsson.com.
