The weakness was released 09/10/2013 by G. Geshev with Microsoft as MS13-070 as confirmed bulletin (Technet) via ZDI (Zero Day Initiative). It is possible to read the advisory at technet.microsoft.com. The public release was coordinated with Microsoft. This vulnerability is uniquely identified as CVE-2013-3863 since 06/03/2013. It is possible to initiate the attack remotely. Required for exploitation is a authentication. The technical details are unknown and an exploit is not publicly available.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 69830 (MS13-070: Vulnerability in OLE Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2876217)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 90908 (Microsoft Windows OLE Remote Code Execution Vulnerability (MS13-070)).
Applying the patch MS13-070 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at technet.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability. Furthermore it is possible to detect and prevent this kind of attack with TippingPoint and the filter 13176.
