VMware ESXi 6.5 without patch ESXi650-201703410-SG, 6.0 U3 without patch ESXi600-201703401-SG, 6.0 U2 without patch ESXi600-201703403-SG, 6.0 U1 without patch ESXi600-201703402-SG, 5.5 without patch ESXi550-201703401-SG; Workstation Pro / Player 12.x prior to 12.5.5; and Fusion Pro / Fusion 8.x prior to 8.5.6 have uninitialized memory usage. This issue may lead to an information leak.
The bug was discovered 03/28/2017. The weakness was presented 06/07/2017 with Tencent (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at vmware.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-4905 since 12/26/2016. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are unknown but a public exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK.
A public exploit has been developed by unamer in C++ and been published 3 years after the advisory. The exploit is available at github.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 99103 (VMware Fusion 8.x < 8.5.6 Multiple Vulnerabilities (VMSA-2017-0006) (macOS)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family MacOS X Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 370354 (VMware Workstation Pro, VMware Workstation Player and VMware Fusion Multiple Vulnerabilities. (VMSA-2017-0006)).
Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published even before and not after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
