Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 6/7 389 Directory Server Timing Password information management

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability was found in Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop, Enterprise Linux HPC Node, Enterprise Linux Server and Enterprise Linux Workstation 6/7 (Operating System). It has been declared as problematic. Affected by this vulnerability is some unknown functionality of the component 389 Directory Server. The manipulation as part of a Timing leads to a information management vulnerability (Password). The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-199. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality. The summary by CVE is:

389 Directory Server in Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop 6 through 7, Red Hat Enterprise Linux HPC Node 6 through 7, Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 6 through 7, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux Workstation 6 through 7 allows remote attackers to obtain user passwords.

The bug was discovered 11/03/2016. The weakness was shared 06/08/2017 by William Brown with Red Hat (Website). It is possible to read the advisory at rhn.redhat.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2016-5405 since 06/10/2016. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. Technical details are unknown but a private exploit is available. The attack technique deployed by this issue is T1592 according to MITRE ATT&CK. William Brown explains the risk as follows: "This attack only affects very specific configurations of directory server. The issue is rated as "low" as a result. This only affects unsalted or clear password storage mechanisms. (…) To be vulnerable, an administrator has to be using a poor configuration (cleartext passwords), which already exposes many risks."

A private exploit has been developed by William Brown. It is declared as proof-of-concept. The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 42 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 95893 (Amazon Linux AMI : 389-ds-base (ALAS-2016-773)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Amazon Linux Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 236166 (Red Hat Update for 389-ds-base (RHSA-2016:2594)).

Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at pagure.io. A possible mitigation has been published before and not just after the disclosure of the vulnerability. William Brown explains: "The timing attack was due to the use of strcmp to compare the password or hashcontent in the password plugin. This was replaced by a constant time variant to mitigate."

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (95893) and SecurityFocus (BID 93884†). The entries VDB-102138 and VDB-102140 are related to this item. Statistical analysis made it clear that VulDB provides the best quality for vulnerability data.
