A vulnerability, which was classified as problematic, has been found in Tor up to 0.3.0.7 (Network Encryption Software). This issue affects the function relay_send_end_cell_from_edge of the component Hidden-Service. The manipulation as part of a BEGIN Cell leads to a input validation vulnerability. The hidden-service feature in Tor before 0.3.0.8 allows a denial of service (assertion failure and daemon exit) in the relay_send_end_cell_from_edge_ function via a malformed BEGIN cell.
The bug was discovered 06/05/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/09/2017 (GitHub Repository). The advisory is shared at github.com. The identification of this vulnerability is CVE-2017-0375 since 11/29/2016. The exploitation is known to be easy. The attack may be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is needed for a successful exploitation. Technical details are known, but no exploit is available.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 4 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100831 (openSUSE Security Update : tor (openSUSE-2017-690)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 170101 (OpenSUSE Security Update for tor (openSUSE-SU-2017:1569-1)).
Upgrading to version 0.3.0.8 eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 6 days after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
