A vulnerability was found in Linux Kernel up to 4.11.4 (Operating System). It has been classified as problematic. The vmw_gb_surface_define_ioctl function (accessible via DRM_IOCTL_VMW_GB_SURFACE_CREATE) in drivers/gpu/drm/vmwgfx/vmwgfx_surface.c in the Linux kernel through 4.11.4 defines a backup_handle variable but does not give it an initial value. If one attempts to create a GB surface, with a previously allocated DMA buffer to be used as a backup buffer, the backup_handle variable does not get written to and is then later returned to user space, allowing local users to obtain sensitive information from uninitialized kernel memory via a crafted ioctl call.
The bug was discovered 06/02/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/13/2017 by Murray McAllister as confirmed git commit (GIT Repository). The advisory is shared for download at git.kernel.org. This vulnerability is traded as CVE-2017-9605 since 06/13/2017. The attack needs to be approached locally. A authentication is needed for exploitation. There are known technical details, but no exploit is available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1592.
The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 11 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101893 (Ubuntu 17.04 : linux, linux-raspi2 vulnerabilities (USN-3358-1)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Ubuntu Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 196854 (Ubuntu Security Notification for Linux Vulnerabilities (USN-3360-1)).
Applying a patch is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at git.kernel.org. A possible mitigation has been published 2 months after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
