The advisory is shared at portal.msrc.microsoft.com. This vulnerability is known as CVE-2017-8506 since 05/03/2017. The attack can be launched remotely. The exploitation doesn't need any form of authentication. It demands that the victim is doing some kind of user interaction. Neither technical details nor an exploit are publicly available. A remote code execution vulnerability exists when Office improperly validates input before loading dynamic link library (DLL) files. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take control of an affected system. An attacker could then install programs; view, change, or delete data; or create new accounts with full user rights. Users whose accounts are configured to have fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100782 (Security Update for Microsoft Office Products (June 2017)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 110299 (Microsoft Office and Microsoft Office Services and Web Apps Security Update June 2017).
Applying the patch KB3191938 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
