An information disclosure vulnerability exists when the Windows kernel improperly initializes objects in memory. To exploit this vulnerability, an authenticated attacker could run a specially crafted application. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could obtain information to further compromise the user’s system. The update addresses the vulnerability by correcting how the Windows kernel initializes objects in memory.
A public exploit has been developed by Google Security Research in C++ and been published 2 weeks after the advisory. The exploit is shared for download at exploit-db.com. It is declared as proof-of-concept. As 0-day the estimated underground price was around $5k-$25k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 100759 (KB4022714: Windows 10 Version 1511 June 2017 Cumulative Update), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family Windows : Microsoft Bulletins and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 91385 (Microsoft Windows Security Update June 2017).
Applying the patch KB4022719 is able to eliminate this problem. The bugfix is ready for download at catalog.update.microsoft.com. A possible mitigation has been published immediately after the disclosure of the vulnerability.
