Tablib 0.11.4 Databook Loader command injection

CVSS Meta Temp Score
CVSS is a standardized scoring system to determine possibilities of attacks. The Temp Score considers temporal factors like disclosure, exploit and countermeasures. The unique Meta Score calculates the average score of different sources to provide a normalized scoring system.
Current Exploit Price (≈)
Our analysts are monitoring exploit markets and are in contact with vulnerability brokers. The range indicates the observed or calculated exploit price to be seen on exploit markets. A good indicator to understand the monetary effort required for and the popularity of an attack.
CTI Interest Score
Our Cyber Threat Intelligence team is monitoring different web sites, mailing lists, exploit markets and social media networks. The CTI Interest Score identifies the interest of attackers and the security community for this specific vulnerability in real-time. A high score indicates an elevated risk to be targeted for this vulnerability.

Detailsinfo

A vulnerability has been found in Tablib 0.11.4 and classified as critical. This vulnerability affects an unknown part of the component Databook Loader. The manipulation with an unknown input leads to a command injection vulnerability. The CWE definition for the vulnerability is CWE-77. The product constructs all or part of a command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended command when it is sent to a downstream component. As an impact it is known to affect confidentiality, integrity, and availability. CVE summarizes:

An exploitable vulnerability exists in the Databook loading functionality of Tablib 0.11.4. A yaml loaded Databook can execute arbitrary python commands resulting in command execution. An attacker can insert python into loaded yaml to trigger this vulnerability.

The bug was discovered 06/13/2017. The weakness was disclosed 06/14/2017 by Cisco with Cisco Talos (Website). The advisory is shared for download at securityfocus.com. This vulnerability was named CVE-2017-2810 since 12/01/2016. The attack can be initiated remotely. No form of authentication is required for a successful exploitation. There are neither technical details nor an exploit publicly available. The MITRE ATT&CK project declares the attack technique as T1202.

The vulnerability was handled as a non-public zero-day exploit for at least 1 days. During that time the estimated underground price was around $0-$5k. The vulnerability scanner Nessus provides a plugin with the ID 101133 (openSUSE Security Update : python-tablib (openSUSE-2017-733)), which helps to determine the existence of the flaw in a target environment. It is assigned to the family SuSE Local Security Checks and running in the context l. The commercial vulnerability scanner Qualys is able to test this issue with plugin 276847 (Fedora Security Update for python-tablib (FEDORA-2017-fe04b06b64)).

Upgrading eliminates this vulnerability. A possible mitigation has been published 2 weeks after the disclosure of the vulnerability.

The vulnerability is also documented in the databases at Tenable (101133) and SecurityFocus (BID 99076†). Once again VulDB remains the best source for vulnerability data.
